You’ve been under them, now find out what they are!

Four years of recording has produced a booklet describing and locating the 130 species of trees on Duntryleague golf course. There are reputedly 12,000 trees and shrubs on the golf course. The oldest trees are 132 years old, planted when the mansion Duntryleague was built. The first part of the booklet, compiled by Malcolm Campbell and Denis Mullen, lists the outstanding trees on each hole in their positions relevant to the distance from trees and greens and has short descriptions and characteristics of the different species. The second part of the booklet lists the trees in alphabetical order so that desired species can be found easily. “People come up here just to look at the trees,” Mr Campbell said. “And once you take an interest in the trees the golf course becomes much more enjoyable ... you can duff your drive down the fairway and say, ‘Look at that beautiful tree’.

”The first trees were planted on the golf course in the 1930s when it was a tree less dairy farm. However, most trees were planted in the 1950s when the landscape architect Ilmar Berzins took charge. Since then many have contributed to establishing the virtual botanic gardens that now exists as Duntryleague golf course. Some of the notable contributors are Tom Hood, Edith Robinson, Denis Mullen, Jack Weltzer, Neville Hawke, John Cochrane, Ray Golland and Geoff Townsend. The booklet includes 25 colour photos of outstanding trees on the course and was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Orange, Orange City Council and Duntryleague. It is on sale at Duntryleague and the Orange Visitors’ Centre for $5.50 with proceeds going to charities in Orange via the Rotary Club of Orange and Duntryleague.

Banned Drivers for 2008 - Is you driver on the list?

Scores of your favourite driver models are to become illegal on January 1 after a change in the rules around driver design. According to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the body that oversees golf's rules, many new drivers are actually breaking size regulations and you won't be allowed to use them in any form of competition from January 1 2008. Illegal drivers are those with a spring-like face which catapults the golf ball off the driver face. The so called 'Hot Face' design is deemed unconforming by the R and A and although you can use them for social golf illegal drivers will be banned from competition. Click here to see the list.
